This is part of a special Halloween feature that will provide a brief overview of the horror genre, with different recommendations for every type of player. You might notice that the games in this series tend to get pretty good ratings. There are two reasons for this. 1) I’m partial to the horror genre, it happens to be my favourite in gaming. 2) This is a feature of games that I would recommend, therefore they’re bound to be scored highly.

There’s nothing quite like a remake of a horror classic to get a fanboy’s rage juices flowing. That being said, it is true that very infrequently, something can come along and surprise us. Unfortunately though, we’ve had too many Texas Chainsaw Massacres (2003), Halloweens (2007) and Friday 13ths (2009), to let the occasional Evil Dead (2013) get our hopes up. The Town that Dreaded Sundown, is a meta- sequel/remake, to the 1976 slasher horror film of the same name. Truthfully exactly what it is, is never entirely clear. Nor is it particularly clear what the film’s intention exactly is. Is it trying to be clever? Is it aiming to deconstruct the slasher genre? Is it a comment on spectatorship? Precisely why is every other shot at a canted angle? All of these questions and more, will be in no way answered by viewing the film itself. Continue reading
