More recently, the award-winning visual artist oversaw some of the critical work on Captain Marvel, helping to deliver its key environments and most striking images.

Based on the iconic manga series, the upcoming Alita: Battle Angel movie has been in gestation for over a decade. A real passion project for producer James Cameron, it went through various iterations until it ended up in the lap of director Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Spy Kids, From Dusk Till Dawn), who was tasked with finally bringing the unique sci-fi vision to the screen.

Occupying a fascinating middle ground between documentary and – for lack of a better term – ‘’traditional cinema’’, American Animals was one of 2018’s most idiosyncratic movies. And also one of its best. For context, the film chronicles a botched heist from 2003, in which four Middle American university students- Spencer Reinhard, Warren Lipka, Eric Borsuk and Chas Allen- attempted to steal the rarest books from their school library, all for the express purpose of injecting a little excitement into their lives. Indeed, rather than being driven by financial gain or necessity, the movie posits that they were really just striving for a sense of worth and meaning in life, as if they were pursuing a twisted version of the American dream.

Raking in a whopping $365 million at the worldwide box office, The Nun is officially the highest grossing installment in The Conjuring franchise. By extension, that also makes it one of the most successful horror movies ever made. It was therefore a great privilege to speak with Corin Hardy, the movie’s overwhelmingly passionate and very articulate director.

About a week ago, I wrote an article ranking the Worst Action Sequences of 2018 and the reception to it was contentious to say the least. A few readers apparently emerged from the piece under the impression that I don’t like ‘’fun’’, or that I always go to movies exclusively to seek out profound themes and Kubrickian subtleties. Of course, anyone who knows me will attest that this couldn’t be further from the truth. I am an action junkie through-and-through, raised on a healthy diet of Shane Black, James Cameron and Steven Spielberg films.

With the imminent arrival of January 1st, it’s worth reflecting on all the different ways that we, as a society, celebrate the New Year. Some usher in the commencement of a fresh calendar by participating in lively social events and extravagant parties. Others indulge in more intimate traditions with their loved ones. Hell, a select few of us even use the occasion to mark new beginnings, resolving to better ourselves, or seizing the opportunity to propose, move to another country or… whatever.
